With 90% of businesses recruiting Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) graduates, this programme leads perfectly to higher education and/or one of several exciting careers. The programme features both Forensic and Medical Pathways, allowing you to develop a range of analytical, scientific and practical skills through an exciting curriculum that includes carrying out your own research project.
You will need 5 GCSEs at grades 9-4/A*-C including Maths and Science. Applicants with a grade 3 in English will be accepted, but must study a GCSE in English alongside this programme.
Learn about the real-life applications of science, with work experience playing an important part. Physiology, genetics and chemical reactions all feature as you develop important skills such as clinical research. You may also choose to specialise in animal science.
During the two-year programme you will cover a variety of units, with assessment involving written assignments, lab practicals and two external exams both at the sixth form college and on work placement.
Students have enjoyed a wealth of extracurricular activities, including work placements within pharmaceutical and clinical research environments. Visiting the Natural History and Science Museums, students have made links between classroom theory and practical application.
Successful completion of the programme will qualify you for undergraduate study and/or a science-based professional qualification. The employment opportunities are vast, ranging from laboratory work in a range of industries (research, quality control, medical, materials testing, forensics, environmental science) to crime scene investigation and specialist roles such as forensic psychologist/scientist. Or you could choose to pursue a career in animal science.
