Programme overview

This exciting and practical programme is delivered by subject specialists to prepare you for degree-level study and/or a career in coaching, sports development and fitness. Discover how to analyse health and fitness, design exercise programmes, analyse human movement, treat and prevent sports injuries and organise sports events. The course offers plenty of opportunities to gain first-hand experience of the sports and leisure industry.

Entry Requirements

You will need 5 GCSEs at grades 9-4/A*-C including Maths and Science. Applicants with a grade 3 in English will be accepted, but must study a GCSE in English alongside this programme.

Course Facts

This two-year course allows you to develop practical skills alongside underpinning theory in areas such as sports coaching, fitness testing, sports development, anatomy and physiology, and sports injuries.


You will be assessed through various methods, including presentations, practical sessions, and online and written assignments.


Our students enjoy trips to the National Cycling Centre in Manchester and the Chill Factor for skiing, snowboarding and sledging. We also run a National Citizen Service residential in partnership with Blackpool FC Community Trust. On our Rugby Development Programme you can train and play like a pro alongside your studies.

Next Steps

Our students have progressed onto degree courses in teaching, sports coaching, PE teaching, sports nutrition, strength and conditioning, physiotherapy and sport management. The North West has a rich sports infrastructure and if you would rather start your career straight away, exciting employment opportunities are available in sports coaching, development and fitness.
